# How Your Site Is Built

> Why Sites are built with Astro, and how that compares to other website platforms.

You don't need to know any of this to use BoostGPT. You tell Mira what you want, and she builds it.

It matters when you choose where your Site lives, though. Every Site Mira builds is a real [Astro](https://astro.build)
project: ordinary code files, built into plain web pages before anyone visits. Most website platforms work differently.

## Why Astro

* **Your pages are fast by default.** Astro turns each page into HTML and CSS, and only adds JavaScript where a page
needs it. There's less for a visitor's phone to download and run.
* **It's made for content.** Astro is built for sites like yours: marketing pages, blogs and newsletters. It's how each
  issue gets [its own page](https://docs.boostgpt.co/newsletter/issue-pages.md).
* **You get real files, not a locked page.** Your Site is a project you can read, and
  [keep in your own repository](https://docs.boostgpt.co/site/repository.md).
* **A broken build doesn't reach your visitors.** Your Site is built before it goes live. If the build fails, publishing
stops and your live Site stays as it was.
* **Every change is saved.** Each change Mira makes is a version you can [go back to](https://docs.boostgpt.co/site/publishing.md).

## How that compares

| Platform | How a page is made | Can you take your site with you? |
| - | - | - |
| **BoostGPT (Astro)** | Built once, ahead of time | Yes. It's a normal project that any host able to build Astro can run |
| **Wix** | On Wix's own platform | No. Wix doesn't support export or hosting elsewhere |
| **Squarespace** | On Squarespace's own platform | Content only, and some of it doesn't come across |
| **Webflow** | Designed and hosted on Webflow | Code on paid Workspace plans, without CMS, ecommerce or user accounts |
| **WordPress** | From a database when requested, unless cached | Yes, to any host that runs WordPress |

The biggest difference isn't in the table. On all of those platforms, you build the site and keep it up to date yourself.
Here, Mira does that work, and you approve what matters.

Platforms change, so check their own help pages before you decide:

> [!NOTE]
>
> Your pages and code are yours, but some features run on BoostGPT: signup forms, Leads, Mira's chat, reviews and issue
> pages. If you host your Site somewhere else, those stop working until you replace them.

## Bringing a site you already have

| What you have | What happens |
| - | - |
| **An Astro site in a repository** | It [syncs both ways](https://docs.boostgpt.co/site/repository.md) with your Site, and builds here. |
| **A plain-HTML site in a repository** | It syncs both ways too. Your files are served exactly as written, with no build, so they're live in your preview as soon as they land. |
| **A site on any other platform or framework** | [Move a Website](https://docs.boostgpt.co/site/move-a-website.md) brings your pages over at the same addresses, and Mira rebuilds the design in Astro. |

A plain-HTML site needs an `index.html` at its root and no `package.json`.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Issue pages are built with Astro, so a plain-HTML Site doesn't get them. To have them, move the site to Astro first.
